Picking out nursery furniture for your baby is an exciting step but it can feel a little overwhelming when there are so many types of bed to choose from and you aren't sure about the pros and cons of each one.

Some parents opt for a moses basket or crib for their newborn whereas others prefer a cot or cot bed from the start. There are similarities between cots and cot beds but one major difference is how long your baby can sleep in them before they outgrow them and need something bigger.

Cots vary in size which is great as you can pick one to suit the space you have available and they tend to be less expensive than cot beds. Usually, they have fixed sides, although some do slide down for easy access, and a child can sleep in it until they are around two years of age.

Cot beds, on the other hand, are designed to adapt as your child grows and have a removable end panel and sides, turning into a low, small bed suitable for toddlers and children up to the age of about five. They are sized in between a cot and a single bed and generally come in a standard size.

Which one you should get will depend on preference, budget, whether you are looking for longevity and whether you plan to have more children that you'll want to use it.

As your child will likely spend more time asleep than awake during their first two years of life, it is important to make sure that whichever cot or cot bed you choose will be safe for them.

Although products and advice are subject to change some recommended guidelines to follow are to always check that the cot or cot bed conforms to British Safety Standards BS EN 716:2008, the distance between the top of the mattress and the top of the cot sides is at least 50cm and that the slats are vertical and spaced no more than 6.5cm apart.

We hope you find the best cot or cot bed for your little one on this list, for more baby products, why not also a look at these baby changing units and bedside cots?
